Technology an ease of formative assessment. We have been using technology in our classroom to the best extent we can. The project I have been working on was not only a way to teach my students, but I wanted to use technology as a way to assess what exactly my students have been learning. This was in an effort to better assist them in filling in any misconceptions they might have gained both in and out of class about the course material. To reach this end I have been using two online resources in particular that reach the largest number of my students with the least hindrance possible. The resources I have been using are Google Classroom in conjunction with Socrative.com. I use these web resources in different ways but for the same purpose. I use them to ensure that the students get access to classroom material as well as being able to gauge their understanding of the material. For this assignment I will be discussing the benefits of using Socrative.com as an assessment tool, and discussing how I approached this project. While using this online resource I specifically had a few objectives in mind.

In Class ApplicationI was happy with how this project was received in class. It is great watching my plans work out. The students have fun going over their notes and I only have the few rare students sitting the activity out. When I do notice them I can do something about it. Because the race is student paced I can move around the room and take on the role of the announcer. While moving around the room I can also ask students if they are having trouble and see if they need any assistance. Because it is a race I don't see that too often. Most students maintain a high level of engagement trying their hardest to win. I mostly see student flipping through their journals desperately trying to find the answers. Its a great activity and I wish I had a bit more to show from what we did in class. The only review sheet I have located is from my latest review session. the excel sheet has the results of my latest review session (11/20/15). Some students did better than others so the review section of this assessment took the whole ten minutes. The link take you to the last review sheet.
The students feedback was mostly positive. Being high school students there were a few who used the open review question to slightly attack me. But as a teacher you need to take those in stride. What I was happiest about was the fact that students used my quiz as a review tool. Though there were only two students who did this optional assignment it makes me happy that the two who did use the resource were both in the top three students on the test.

Reflection on ILP Assignment I enjoy using all the resources I can for an assignment. I still have a lot to work on as I begin taking over more and more of my classes. So far what I have been putting together is something I can work on in just one day with my class. My main objective is however to be able to do a multiday assignment featuring a few different online resources. If you look at my classroom resource section you will get an idea of where I am heading. I want to use websites such as KhanAcademy to attempt a sort of flipped classroom setting. I am still in the process of working it out.
Each rout I take has its own problems. The most significant is that students need to sign up for a service. I am not using a service that the students need to pay for. The biggest problem I have encountered so far is many of the free services will promote their value added services, which are not free. I have signed up for a few different possible sites and since then I have received on average 6 emails a week promoting one offer or another. This is something I am seriously trying to limit for my future students. One solution I have come up with is having the students sign up for the least intrusive web service and having them mark the service as junk so they will not have to deal with the spam that the site entail. This is something that I am still working on. I want to attempt a flipped class but first I want to make sure all the bugs are worked out. From what I have done so far however I really like what we have accomplished in class. The Socrative review sessions we have completed have all been fun. I get to run around the room and be goofy. This builds upon student excitement and gets them excited to answer the next questions. The formative power behind the website is amazing and I love being able to leave a quiz open and see how my students are attempting the assignment. I plan to increase student participation in at-home quizzes by incorporating a few questions that will be on the test verbatim. This will let students feel they are getting away with something, which I believe will dramatically increase participation. As for Google Classroom I would like to say I had a huge hand in getting it established at my school, but that is more my host teacher’s pet project. The classroom is more of a reminder and a second source of in class assignments. Lab handouts and all the paper we give out in class is made available electronically. So far however we have not made it an avenue for our students to turn in work. I need to ask my host teacher if I can have a larger role in setting up the online classroom. I feel I can provide additional resources the students will find useful. This might have to wait until I take over a bit more of the classes however, because most of the information I need is only on my host teacher’s computer. I will just have to see how I am able to fully utilize Google Classroom. |
